Türkiye became a member of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations

Turkey has been elected as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for two years with 186 positive votes out of 193 General Assembly members. This means that Turkey will be a member of the UN Economic and Social Council from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2025, representing the Western European region.

Turkey has been chosen to join the council instead of Greece, whose membership will end at the end of this year. On the other hand, Russia and North Macedonia did not receive the minimum 123 positive votes to enter the council, and another vote will be held for the Eastern European region.

Additionally, 18 new members have been elected to the UN Economic and Social Council, including countries like France, Germany, Japan, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The council has a total of 54 members, and 18 are elected each year through a voting process.
